I'm disappointed in DMX04

January 29, 2004 by Joe Williams

I have DMX04 installed on a Win XPP system, 512 meg ram, and I found it to unstable, frequently crashing.  After a few weeks of that, another user in the Macromedia forums suggested I save "very often", which stopped the all too frequent crashes.

Then I discovered a major bug in the CSS side.  Occasionally, DMX04 will write nonsense <span>'s into the code...and other times the CSS code view isn't properly updated by editing rules in the CSS design panels.  So you could (like I did - twice) spend several hours on a stylesheet, and it wouldn't be saved!  Frustrating, because you don't expect that sort of thing to happen.

I attempted to submit that bug to Macromedia through their forums (my 90 day/2 event support had expired), but the Macromedia people just brushed me off - as they tend to do with everyone who reports bugs.

A Team Macromedia Member, however, advised me to install and use Top Style if I wanted to do any significant work with stylesheets, which I did - and that ended my CSS woes.  But at a cost and another program I really didn't want.

Anyway, I am sorely disappointed in both the DMX04 program and Macromedia support, and would advise anyone considering purchasing this bloated bag of bugs to hold off until it's properly updated.

Both comments you posted can't be seen as bugs. The extra span tags are only placed when you try to add a style to something else than a HTML tag (e.g. part of a text). Always watch your selection when adding classes to HTML elements.

Also, when you make alterations to your stylesheet using the css palette and have your stylesheet open at the same time, the stylesheet is changed bot NOT saved (as it should be). You can notice this happening by looking for a * sign next to your css file (in the tabs of open documents). This works exactly the same as when you would e.g. use the "search and replace", "update link" functionality: an open file never gets saved, as the user has control over it. Don't blame the tool when the user is to blame...
